Happiness is not a simple sense or feeling that we experience a few times a day, nor is it some kind of luxury accessible only to a chosen few. It’s a state of mind that we can develop, nurture, and maintain through our thinking.
Many believe happiness is tied to wealth, success, or luck. But the truth is entirely different. “How happy we are and how happy we can be” is 100% determined by our mindset. It is not what we have but how we think that shapes our happiness.
While writing The Key to Unlock Happiness, I understood how deeply our thoughts influence our happiness. Through this journey, I discovered simple yet powerful ways of thinking that can lead anyone toward a happier life. Today, I want to share a few of them with you. Let’s explore
1- Understand That Happiness Begins in Your Mind
Yes, your mind is strongly capable of creating happiness, and your thoughts control your emotions. Every feeling, whether joy, stress, or sadness, comes from the way you perceive the events, not the events themselves.
To explain this, I will use the same example as I did in my book. Imagine two people stuck in traffic. One is annoyed because he’s counting this time as wasted, while the other is calm because he can use this time to listen to his favorite podcast. So, now you can understand how both are stuck in an identical situation, but their thoughts guide them to how to feel.
So what can you do? Pay attention to your thoughts throughout the day. The next time you feel unhappy, pause and ask yourself: “What thought makes me feel this way?” If you can change your thoughts, you can change how you feel.
2- Train Your Mind to Focus on What You Want
Now you know that your mind shapes reality. So, if your thoughts are constantly engaged in fearing what you are lacking or negative thoughts, you can get stuck in the loop of unhappiness. So, it’s time to break it.
So, what’s the hack to break this negative cycle? Well, you can ask yourself that:
- Is this thought 100% correct?
- Is there any other perspective to analyze the situation?
- Is this situation worth ruining your mood or the moment?
3- Visualize Your Happiness
The mind responds powerfully to images. When we visualize positive experiences, our brains react like they’re real. That’s why top sportsmen use visualization to improve their performance, as it mentally prepares them for success.
As Napolean Hill said, ‘Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.’
I know this idea is crazy, but our ability to picture a joyful life can actually make it more likely to happen. So, each day, practice closing your eyes for a few minutes and envisioning yourself feeling truly happy.
4- Develop a Faith-Based Mindset
Faith isn’t just about religion; it’s about believing in something greater than the present moment. Whether it’s faith in yourself, the universe, or a higher power, this belief provides hope and resilience.
James Fowler, a psychologist, studied how faith plays a role in shaping our happiness. Those who believe in a purpose beyond themselves experience greater peace, even in hard times.
Therefore, it’s better to find ways to strengthen your faith, such as through meditation, prayer, personal affirmations, or simply trusting that things will work out.
5- Surround Yourself With Positive Influence
The people and information we expose to ourselves shape our thinking. Therefore, if one is continuously engaging in a negative environment because of their relationship, work, or social media, their thinking will reflect that.
As I discussed in my book The Key to Unlock Happiness, it is important to be intentional about your environment. Surrounding yourself with uplifting influences can dramatically shift your mindset.
Conclusion:
Happiness isn’t about waiting for the perfect timing or surroundings. It’s about developing the right mindset, focusing on what brings you joy, believing in your own potential, and training your mind to think positively.
In The Key to Unlock Happiness, I go even deeper into the strategies and philosophies that can help you take complete control of your thoughts and achieve everlasting happiness.
